A Guide to Quitting Smoking Benefits
By now, everyone knows smoking is bad for you. The dangers are printed on every cigarette pack and highly publicized in the media. Smoking can lead to heart disease, stroke, lung cancer and other serious health problems. The very tobacco companies that manufacture and sell the tobacco products acknowledge that smoking is dangerous. While you may know this, you may not realize quitting smoking benefits in detail. There are plenty of benefits to quitting smoking that begin to occur mere minutes after your last cigarette and continue for years to come.
Only 20 minutes after you finish your final cigarette, both pulse rate and blood pressure decrease. The temperature of the hands and feet increase. This is due to better circulation and more oxygen in the blood. While this may happen every time a regular smoker puts a cigarette out, the benefit doesn't last long when they light up again two hours later. Eight hours following your last cigarette, the level of carbon monoxide in your blood decreases, while oxygen increases. After an entire day, you've lowered your risk of cardiac problems due to smoking.
The benefits to quitting smoking don't end there. After 2-3 days the nerve endings that were compromised by smoke begin to repair themselves. You'll also notice that your sense of smell and taste are more acute. Many smokers light up after eating or while having coffee, so these activities may be triggers at first but soon you'll find your food tastes better and you can have coffee or a cocktail without a cigarette. It's estimated that over 15 years of smoking cessation your lungs can improve their condition to that of a non-smoker. Although health is the number one reason to stop smoking, there are other reasons as well.
Some quitting smoking benefits are cosmetic. For example, you won't have smelly hands or nicotine stained fingers. Your breath will smell better, your teeth will stay whiter and more oxygen will be available to your skin. Smoking is very aging to the face, smokers often look older than they are. Finally, think of the financial benefits to quitting smoking. If a pack of cigarettes cost $4 (that's definitely on the cheap side) and you smoke a pack a day, that's almost $120 every month. The sooner you quit smoking, the sooner you can make better use of the money you were wasting on cigarettes.
